Chimney Before Masonry Repair

Chimney Before Masonry Repair

If your chimney is leaning, crumbling, or missing bricks, among other aesthetic problems, then it’s safe to say that you have a deteriorating chimney—and a very real fire hazard—on your hands. And if you can see damage on the outside of your chimney, just imagine all the damage hiding inside your chimney. The chimney masons at Pozzi Chimney Sweep want to help make your home safe again so that your family and home is protected. After all, a chimney left unrepaired can lead to all kinds of problems: it may release toxic gases into your home or allow sparks or flames to escape onto your roof or to come into contact with the combustible materials in your chimney. Loose masonry also poses a risk of damage to your property and the people on it. And once a chimney begins to deteriorate, that deterioration grows rapidly if left unrepaired.

Unfortunately chimneys are prone to deterioration. Not only are chimneys continually exposed to wind, rain, snow, and ice—not to mention fire—and thus must tolerate cycles of expansion and contraction, but both brick and mortar are porous materials. To function safely and efficiently, chimneys require regular maintenance by a certified chimney technician. If repaired using the wrong materials or techniques, your chimney will be unsafe and unsightly.

How to Protect Your Chimney Masonry

There are plenty of things you can do to lengthen the life of your chimney and protect your chimney masonry from deterioration. Remember that small problems that are fixed early will save you a lot of money in the future.

  • Make sure your chimney crown isn’t cracked or deteriorated and is made of the correct materials.
  • Have mortar joints repaired, and make sure that the correct mortar mix is used. Most chimneys require a specific custom mortar mix to ensure that all masonry materials used are compatible with each other, and look good, too. Read more about this on our Tuckpointing page.
  • Have your chimney professionally waterproofed.
  • Have your chimney inspected annually by an experienced chimney mason.

My fireplace smelled strange, and because I knew I hadn’t had it cleaned in forever, I looked for a service online and Gary’s came up. He came out and inspected the firebox and said that I needed a new chase cover on the chimney. He ordered me a stainless steel one that he had fabricated somewhere and brought it out later and installed it and did a real nice job. He called me a number of times and kept me informed about what he was doing … I hired the right guy.
