What Is Tuckpointing?

Lots of older chimneys require tuckpointing work, which involves “tucking” mortar into the area between bricks that have been damaged by cracks or gaps. Mortar is a cement-like material that holds your chimney bricks together and keeps Mother Nature out. Over time, mortar softens or rots and starts to fall out. The tools used to put mortar in place are called “pointing” trowels—hence the “tuckpointing” name. Tuckpointing is valuable because it adds many years of life to your chimney by preventing water from entering the bricks. It also ensures that your chimney bricks won’t crack during freezing and thawing cycles and maintains the appearance of historical chimneys.

We recommend that you handle this repair before winter, which is when the icy Illinois weather can do the worst harm to your chimney bricks. Contact Pozzi Chimney Sweep today to schedule an appointment with our chimney mason. You may also want to read about our chimney masonry services.

I would like to speak to you about my experience with the Pozzi Chimney Sweep. It was mid October 2012 when I called about a problem with our chimney, asked Gary to check it out. Gary was here right away, did a good thorough check, said we needed to replace the old chimney liner, which we had Gary and his people do. In a short time the problem was taken care of, did no short cuts, everything was proper, looks real good as well.
